Tzu Chi Relief for Cebu
After living through the violent winds and torrential rains of Super Typhoon Odette (Rai) on the evening of December 16, 2021, Cebuanos woke up to a disheartening sight: the total devastation of their homes and livelihood. According to a January 14, 2022 report by the Department of Social Welfare and Development, 636,837 families, or close to 2 million persons in Cebu, were affected by the Category 5 storm.
Tzu Chi volunteers from Manila flew to Cebu on January 1, 2022 to begin a week of relief work. Guided by their Cebuano counterparts, they identified typhoon victims in the impoverished coastal barangays of Lapu-Lapu City and Carcar City, as well as an underserved community in the Municipality of Sibonga. The distribution of 20-kg sacks of rice to families in Sibonga and Talisay soon followed. But it was news of cash aid of up to P20,000 that sent crowds crying tears of joy. Metrobank and BDO branches in Carcar, Lapu-Lapu, and Opon, facilitated the release of financial assistance to 2,808 beneficiaries.
