Cebu scholars share their rice relief with Odette victims
By Joy Rojas
Days before Christmas, Tzu Chi volunteers in Cebu brought hope and smiles to scholars and their families severely affected by Super Typhoon Odette (international name Rai).
On December 22 and 23, volunteers distributed relief goods to 62 scholars from Barangay Pulpogan, and 45 scholars in the Municipality of Catmon. Each scholar claimed 20kg sacks of Taiwan rice, 10 liters of potable water, and an assortment of grocery items.
Scholars were beyond grateful for the blessings they received, as food and drinking water are scarce following the widespread destruction of homes and businesses caused by Typhoon Odette.
So volunteers were surprised to find out that the scholars had initiated a distribution drive of their own. Taking a portion of their rice, Catmon scholars donated 27 packs of 3kg rice—or what they call “bundles of joy”—to neighbors worst hit by the storm. The packs were personally distributed on December 26 to families in the coastal barangays of Corazon, San Jose, Panalipan, and Duyan. Thirteen families received one pack of rice each, while seven families were each given two packs of rice.
Such an act of selflessness in a time of overwhelming devastation proves that everyone—including those who have lost everything—still has something to give.
