Relief for Typhoon Egay victims in Cagayan
Tzu Chi volunteers’ latest relief operations on August 20, 2023 was in Cagayan Province, where Super Typhoon Egay (International name: Doksuri) ravaged parts of Luzon with its powerful winds and heavy rains last July. Among the survivors were the Indigenous People of Agta, whose hectares of cornfields were unsalvageable and thatched homes ruined beyond repair.
Sacks of rice, assorted cooking ingredients, plastic plates and cups, notebooks, blankets, and tools for construction were distributed by teams assigned to Barangay Callungan in the Municipality of Sanchez Mira and Barangay Sta. Rosa in the Municipality of Abulug. Locals are just as grateful for the hope and concern extended to them by Tzu Chi volunteers.
“In you, we see whole-hearted service. That’s why you give so generously,” says Leila Tayam, a member of the Agta tribe who offered to accompany volunteers to Barangay Kittag, the farthest community in Sanchez Mira, and home to 22 Agta households. “Thank you to all who make up Tzu Chi, especially to Master Cheng Yen. We’re very thankful you chose us to receive this much relief. Long may you live and may God bless you.”
