Tzu Chi’s Relief for Odette Survivors
On December 16, 2021, the Philippines was hit by Super Typhoon Odette, a Category 5 storm that spared no one as she moved across the Visayas and Mindanao regions. In her wake, she left billions of pesos in damages to property and livelihood. To this day, millions of Filipinos remain without food, water, and basic necessities.
Tzu Chi Foundation volunteers from Manila, Cebu, Bohol, and Leyte quickly responded with rice distribution efforts and cash aid in areas severely affected by the storm. But the typhoon victims showed admirable resilience and selflessness in the face of overwhelming loss. As floodwaters rose to the second floor of the municipal hall, Bohol social worker Analou Luayon had the presence of mind to endorse a list of beneficiaries to her companions should she perish from the storm. In Cebu, Cecille Alcedera divided her rice relief with five neighbors. And men, women, and children did not hesitate to contribute to Tzu Chi coin banks. Indeed, blessings abound amid the devastation.
