New batch of LTP starts New Classes

Three courses in Tzu Chi’s Livelihood Training Program: Sewing, Machine Operation, and Aircon and Refrigeration Servicing on October 14 restart with a fresh batch of 35 enrollees. With some already in their 40s, the program is an opportunity for them to become productive members of society once more.

Three courses of Tzu Chi’s Livelihood Training Program (LTP) have recently begun anew with a fresh batch of enrollees.

Thirty-five new enrollees on October 14 attended their first day of classes at the Tzu Chi Great Love Campus in Sta. Mesa, Manila. 8 are enrolled in the Sewing Course, 15 in Aircon and Refrigeration Servicing Course, and 12 in Machine Operation Course. In the next few months, they will learn skills and work ethics that will help them land lucrative jobs.

The LTP students are between the ages of 18 and 40 years old, allowing older enrollees like Angelo Delos Reyes(40) to learn something new. He enrolled in Aircon and Refrigeration Servicing in the hope of starting his own repair shop business.

“Even though I’m 40 years old, I have no doubt that I could still learn a new skill. Studying here in Tzu Chi [Livelihood Training Program] will be a big help, especially for me since I have zero knowledge of aircon and refrigeration repair,” said 40-year-old Delos Reyes.

“As a child, I’ve been fond of electrical stuff. Back then, I dreamt of being an electrical engineer but couldn’t because of our impoverished life. With the help of Tzu Chi, I can pursue this dream again,” he added.

Rowena Javier enrolled in the Sewing Course with a similar dream. The 40-year-old housewife from Marikina City owes the foundation a great deal for its action after Tropical Storm Ondoy (Ketsana) inundated the city in 2009. Also, the foundation helped restore her mother’s eyesight through cataract surgery during a medical mission at the Great Love Campus.

“I used to make rags, so I thought about taking up Sewing to learn more. I might even end up opening my own tailoring business,” said Javier.

“After completing the course, I might be able to help my husband. My children are in senior high and well on their way to college. I can even pass on my knowledge to them,” she added.

Aside from these courses, Tzu Chi also added Caregiving Course last August to their list of livelihood courses for those who longed for an opportunity to get a better life. Its pioneer batch of 15 students is undergoing training to become caregivers to senior citizens, children, and people with special needs.

From its beginning in teaching out of school youths in Sewing and Dental Aide courses in 2010, the LTP has included several other courses when the manpower demand is there. The program has since helped hundreds of Filipinos become breadwinners to help their families out of poverty.
