The Tzu Chi Foundation continues to help hospitals throughout the nation fight the COVID-19 pandemic, with its mission to donate vital equipment needed in the treatment of patients.

In the Eastern Visayas, High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) oxygen machines were donated to the Eastern Visayas Medical Center, and Divine Word Hospital, both located in Tacloban City.

According to Department of Health (DOH) statistics, Tacloban currently has 2,547 confirmed cases, with 2,398 recovers and 56 deaths recorded since the pandemic hit the Eastern Visayas.

Dr. Salvadore Evardone of the Eastern Visayas Medical Center explained that “since our hospital admits severe to critical [Covid] patients, the high flow machines are very significant,” to the treatment of patients.

In Central Luzon, Tzu Chi donated four HFNC machines to Dr. Paulino J. Garcia Memorial Research and Medical Center, in Cabanatuan City.

Central Luzon COVID-19 infections have seen a sharp increase in confirmed cases earlier this year from March to May, more than doubling from 40,000 to 95,000 in only two months.

Dr. Paulino J. Garcia Memorial Research and Medical Center in Cabantuan is a DOH COVID referral hospital with a 400 bed capacity. Out of those, 200 are allocated to COVID 19 patients.

Dr. Ivan Manambao was very grateful for the HFNC machines donated, saying that “we sometimes accept up to 250 COVID patients, and with emergency room isolation overflowing, these high flow machines will help us at the emergency level.”

Four more HFNC machines were also donated to Pasig City Children’s Hospital, where Dr. Joselito Morete noted how “last year’s COVID-19 variant was milder than what we are dealing with now. Most of our patients are intubated and require ventilator support.”

Dr. Morete also noted that out of the 141 beds allocated for COVID-19 patients, they are currently over capacity at 153. He was thankful, however, that the number of hospitalized children remains low, at under 20.

You can help Tzu Chi help others by sending your pledges for the purchase of high-flow nasal cannula machines to the following Tzu Chi Foundation bank accounts. Any amount is greatly appreciated:
