Growing Kind Hearts: Tzu Chi Opens kindergarten class in the Philippines

Four years after it first opened its doors to young learners, Tzu Chi Great Love Preschool Philippines marked another milestone in its mission to nurture values-driven education. On July 31, 2026, the foundation inaugurated its very first kindergarten program at the Tzu Chi Agno campus in Quezon City, welcoming a class of seven students.
With the theme “Growing Kind Hearts for a Better Tomorrow,” the ceremony brought together students, faculty, staff, volunteers, families, and distinguished guests in a celebration of growth and shared purpose.
Established in September 2022, Tzu Chi Great Love Preschool Philippines was the foundation’s first venture into early childhood education. Guided by a progressive curriculum rooted in compassion and respect, it has since become a nurturing space for children to learn not only academics but also values that shape character. The accreditation of its kindergarten program signals a new chapter in this journey.
This achievement was made possible through the steadfast support of faculty members, volunteers, and families. Their commitment ensured the successful accreditation process, paving the way for the school’s expansion.
The event was graced by officials from the Department of Education, including Ederlina D. Baleña, chief officer-in-charge of School Governance and Operations Division, and Sharon A. Gutierrez, division planning officer III of the Schools Division Office of Quezon City. Both expressed admiration for Tzu Chi’s mission.
Baleña remarked: “I actually like your mission, to nurture, to create, and grow kind hearts for a better tomorrow. Because more than the intellectual, what we really need are kind hearts. For this, thank you, and we wish you success in the endeavor.”
Gutierrez added: “I am looking forward to Tzu Chi progressing to higher grade levels because time flies so fast. But it’s a good strategy to start with kinder, because it’s the foundational stage when it comes to children, as Sigmund Freud said.”
Families of pioneer kindergarten students also shared their joy. Justine Gacutan, father of Jasbelle Mariah, expressed gratitude: “Congratulations for opening your kindergarten, and thank you for welcoming us in your community.”
Mark Yan, father of Marcus who has been with Tzu Chi since pre-kindergarten, reflected on his son’s growth: “From his one year of preschool here, we saw big improvements especially at home. He became more sociable, respectful, and able to do household chores that were practiced here in school. We really waited for Directress Jane to contact us once the approval had been made by the Department of Education. Then we were happy when she told us kindergarten will push through.”
For school directress Jane Sy, the milestone was both a celebration and a reminder of the mission ahead. “In this changing and challenging world, we look forward to growing kids’ hearts—hearts that are ready to lead our future,” she said.
To her, the ribbon-cutting ceremony was only the beginning. The true mission continues in the daily work of creating meaningful experiences for children and families, carried forward in partnership with the vision of Tzu Chi Foundation founder, Dharma Master Cheng Yen.
