2021, TYPHOON ODETTE, TACLOBAN CITY
By Joy Rojas
Responding to the call for help after the devastation caused by Super Typhoon Odette (international name Rai), Tzu Chi Foundation volunteers recently unpacked and loaded 3,000 blankets into a chartered flight en route to Tacloban City, Leyte, in Eastern Visayas. Along with parts of Mindanao, the region bore the brunt of Odette, a Category 5 storm that slammed through the islands last December 16, leaving hundreds dead and thousands without food, water, shelter, and other basic utilities.
Transporting the blankets from Manila to Tacloban was made possible through the help and kindness of Buddy Zamora and Elsie Chua.
Made of fleece and upcycled PET bottles, the blankets from Taiwan are initial aid from the foundation that also sent a team of volunteers to Odette-ravaged Bohol and Cebu to assess for damages. The blankets will be distributed to various areas in the Visayas.
In 2013, Tzu Chi volunteers embarked on major rehabilitation efforts on Tacloban and other parts of Leyte, which suffered massive destruction to lives and properties in the aftermath of Super Typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan).
Help Tzu Chi Foundation help our brothers and sisters in the Visayas get back on their feet after this horrific disaster. Your pledge will go a long way in providing for their food, water, and other basic needs.
