The program started with the registration of scholars and volunteers. Welcome remarks from Tzu Chi Palo coordinator Randy Militante. He encouraged the scholars to embrace financial literacy as a key tool for their future. He urged, “The importance of being financially prepared to contribute to your family is important, and understanding finances can empower you to be more effective in your daily finances as students with this let us all listen eagerly to our topic for this class.”

Tzu Chi scholar Rose Ann Malbas shared a Jing-Si Aphorism, discussing the importance of self-discipline. She emphasized that “Self-discipline is being responsible for oneself and managing oneself well,” believing it is a foundation for practicing compassion and inner peace.

Following this, scholars were inspired by the Master Tells Stories about the story of the “Kindhearted Blind Couple. Achi Roxanne Dayata shared her insights of reminding everyone that being mindful of the people around us can inspire change and compassionate action. The message speaks to the role of mindfulness in fostering a more caring and supportive environment around us.

The day then took a fun turn with a team-building activity led by the Palo scholars where participants bonded and worked together, strengthening their relationships and collaboration.

The highlight of the event came when guest speaker Achi Ma. Arianne Faye Torreros took the stage to talk about Financial Literacy. At just 22 years old, she is already a financial advisor and an advocate for education rights and breaking stereotypes. She shared her knowledge and expertise in financial management, encouraging scholars to take control of their financial future through smart budgeting, saving, and investment strategies. Her talk resonated with the young audience, inspiring them to see financial literacy as an essential life skill that can drive both personal success and compassionate giving.

“Before, I was not aware of what it means to have literacy on finances, you need to understand money and how it works in your daily life,” says Tzu Chi Palo scholar Espiranza Obinguar.

Scholars also performed a special sign language presentation of “Isang Pamilya,” celebrating the unity and familial bond within the Tzu Chi community.

The event concluded with closing remarks from Tzu Chi scholar Lorenda Dinalo, who expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Achi Arianne Torreros for sharing her time and expertise. She also thanked the Tzu Chi volunteers, staff, and her fellow scholars for their love, effort, and support in making the event a success.

Tzu Chi Palo’s 3rd Humanities Class served as a meaningful platform to not only enhance their financial knowledge but also deepen their understanding of how financial wisdom can empower them to take compassionate action in their lives.
