Diligence Day reminds volunteers to uphold Master Cheng Yen’s teachings
By Joy Rojas
If Tzu Chi volunteers remain steadfast in their commitment to extend compassion and relief to the poor and suffering, it’s because of events like Diligence Day, morning gatherings such as the one attended by 108 participants on April 6 at the Jing Si Hall of Buddhist Tzu Chi Campus, Sta. Mesa, Manila.
A gentle reminder to uphold the teachings of Tzu Chi founder Dharma Master Cheng Yen, Diligence Day began with a review of the “Sutra of Infinite Meanings.” An important text to Master Cheng Yen, it is to be sung and chanted with respect and sincerity so it may reach different people and create a harmonious society.
In her talk, Tzu Chi Philippines Deputy CEO Woon Ng encouraged volunteers to “improve and grow,” “uphold Tzu Chi’s humanistic culture,” and “be mindful of Tzu Chi’s missions.” “Let us represent Tzu Chi, not just through our uniform but through words and actions,” she said.
After a brief huddle with their respective groupmates, volunteers took turns sharing how they can be models of diligence:
“Keep your mind broad and pure.”
“Learn to be grateful, understanding, and tolerant.”
“Be gentle in posture, kind and amiable in attitude, and remember Tzu Chi’s rituals in any occasion.”
“Be able to think from others’ perspective, work hard to change your attitude, and learn to cultivate both blessings and wisdom.”
Such mindsets will certainly help volunteers as they prepare for Tzu Chi’s numerous activities in the coming months. Master Cheng Yen is confident they will succeed.
"As long as we are diligent, nothing in the world is difficult, especially when it comes to doing good,” she said. “Never should one pass up a good deed, let alone refuse it."
