Angelo King Foundation gives P1M to Tzu Chi’s calamity relief efforts
By Joy Rojas
Angelo King Foundation, Inc. (AKFI) presented Tzu Chi Philippines with a donation for P1 million for the foundation’s ongoing relief efforts for survivors of Typhoon Kristine (Trami). The group, led by AKFI President Teddy Kingsu, turned over the check on November 7 at the Buddhist Tzu Chi Campus (BTCC) in Sta. Mesa, Manila.
Tzu Chi Philippines CEO Henry Yuñez warmly received Kingsu and company at a vegetarian lunch held at BTCC’s café. Also at the lunch was Tzu Chi Taiwan CEO Po-wen Yen, who was in the country to give talks during Tzu Chi Philippines’ Diligence Camp, four days of in-depth lectures and sharing by and for Tzu Chi volunteers.
AKFI’s generous donation is the latest showing of support from the humanitarian, non-government organization whose namesake is the respected philanthropist and businessman. In 2022, it donated funds to facilitate Tzu Chi’s relief operations for families in Bohol, Cebu, and Southern Leyte affected by Typhoon Odette (Rai). Months later, AKFI turned over 50 bicycles, which Tzu Chi volunteers awarded to select scholars and livelihood beneficiaries. Residents of Tzu Chi Great Love Village Palo in Leyte are grateful to AKFI for providing the resources to put up the village’s multipurpose hall and livelihood training center.
“Our foundation focuses on four areas: livelihood, education, health, and well-being,” says Kingsu. “Tzu Chi is very well organized and in line with our [advocacies]. We have the same direction in helping people.”
Tzu Chi Bicol volunteers recently completed a rice distribution program in barangays Bula and Baao, Camarines Sur. In Bula, 2,476 beneficiaries each received a 10-kilo sack of rice, while in Baao, 737 beneficiaries each claimed a 10-kilo sack of rice.
As of this writing, volunteers are conducting rice relief distributions in the municipalities of Milaor and Nabua.
