AKFI turns over P1 million for Tzu Chi’s flood relief
By Joy Rojas
Tzu Chi Philippines received a P1 million donation from Angelo King Foundation, Inc. (AKFI) to support its relief efforts following the massive flooding caused by typhoons Crising (Wipha), Dante (Francisco), and Emong (Co-may) plus relentless monsoon rains in July.
Tzu Chi Philippines CEO Henry Yuñez accepted the donation from AKFI Chairman Ernesto Garilao in a small gathering held at the AKFI office, King's Court 1 Bldg., Chino Roces Avenue, Makati, on August 2.
AKFI also turned over a P1 million donation each to the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. and Operation Damayan, the social arm of the Philippine Star, for their respective relief projects.
Amid severe weather last month, Tzu Chi volunteers checked on families staying in evacuation centers in Quezon City, Marikina City, and Rizal Province. Through text surveys conducted by Tzu Chi social workers, they brought rice and basic essentials, construction materials, and cash aid to beneficiaries affected by floods in Quezon City, Marikina City, Caloocan City, Valenzuela City, and San Mateo, Rizal. Nineteen Educational Assistance Program scholars, 11 Technical-Vocational Program scholars, three patients from the Medical Assistance Program, and eight local volunteers were grateful for the assistance.
On August 9, Tzu Chi volunteers will organize a distribution of rice and fungal ointment for over 1,300 residents in Hagonoy, Bulacan, whose communities remain submerged in a combination of floodwater and high tide.
AKFI’s generous donation is its latest show of support for the Buddhist humanitarian organization. In 2021, it helped fund Tzu Chi’s relief operations for victims of Typhoon Odette (Rai) in Bohol, Cebu, and Southern Leyte. In April 2022, it turned over 50 bicycles, which Tzu Chi awarded to beneficiaries of its livelihood, medical assistance, and educational assistance programs. In May 2024, it provided the financial resources to build the Multipurpose Hall and Livelihood Training Center of the Tzu Chi Palo Great Love Village in Leyte. And in November 2024, it gave a P1 million donation for Tzu Chi’s relief efforts for survivors of Typhoon Kristine (Trami).
