Around 370 staff and personnel from the Office of the President of the Philippines (OP) received Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment to relieve body pains during Tzu Chi Foundation’s 237th medical mission last March 28, 2019.

A total of 104 doctors from Tzu Chi International Medical Association (TIMA) and local volunteers worked together to serve 1053 patients for their health needs. The medical mission offered dental services, minor surgeries, general medicine consultations, pediatrics, origin point therapy and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

For the Traditional Chinese Medicine and Origin Point Therapy, 18 doctors and 20 Tzu Chi volunteers cooperated to serve 370 patients who complained mostly of pains on their backs and heads.

Doctor Mo Chun Hsing, who practice Origin Point Therapy, said that 80 percent of the people complained about pain on their upper and lower backs as well as headaches because they frequently go in and out of air-conditioned rooms.

These frequent body pains urged Dennis Tabor and Jesil Simbajon to seek help from the practitioners of Origin Point Therapy. Dennis attributes this to his frequent failure to change clothes after doing strenuous activities, while Jesil blames poor posture, prolonged hours of sitting and stress for her pain.

“The pain is distracting; it lessens my focus on what I’m doing. [You] have to bear the pain and it affects my working performance.” said Jesil who works in the finance office.

After a therapy session with the practitioners, both Jesil and Dennis felt better and relieved from their body pains.

“[At first], it’s painful but after that, I felt lighter [especially] my back. I really felt lighter.” said Dennis.

Aside from Origin Point Therapy, the medical mission also offers Traditional Chinese Medicine treatments like acupuncture and acupressure. Joy Serquiña, who have been working in the Office of the President for 18 years, received a Ventosa therapy for her back pains and headache. The doctor also taught her how to press some pressure points to relieve her body pains in the future.

“She’s great because she explained why my head and back hurts. And what I can do to lessen the pain the next time it hurts, [she explained] what I can do for immediate relief.” Serquiña said of her doctor.

Traditional Chinese Medicine focuses on maintaining the balance and harmony of the elements inside the human body. Compared to western medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine uses organic herbal medicine and other practices to promote physical well-being.

Jesil said that instead of seeking help from western medicine, she went to Traditional Chinese Medicine and Origin Point Therapy to relieve her pain.

“When I heard that there would be this kind of treatment, I thought that I should come here… knowing the doctors are Chinese and Taiwanese, I know they’re good because that’s their forte.”

Jesil also noted that she doesn’t like taking medicine for her body pains for the fear of other side effects that might damage her other organs.

“I don’t want to take a lot of medicines because you’re curing some points of your body but it would affect other parts like the kidney. I’m afraid. So it is better to have natural form of healing or treatment.” she added.

Doctor Mo Chun Hsing said that since Origin Point Therapy doesn’t use medication and only uses the hands in providing relief, people readily accepts the treatment. He also said that he wants to teach everyone so that they can help others, especially those who could not afford to go to hospitals.
